Dear SOM Students,
COVID-19 is now spreading in our Atlanta community. Our University and School of Medicine leadership have been working together to reduce the risk of COVID-19 in our Emory and surrounding communities. We have already prohibited our clinical students’ participation in the care of patients suspected of or diagnosed with COVID-19. Additionally, students are prohibited from caring for any patient in respiratory isolation.
Today, the University has provided a plan to begin a shift to remote learning effective March 23. As part of that plan, the SOM will implement plans for our programs to reduce the risk of COVID-19 spread among students, our Emory Community, and importantly, our hospitals and clinics.
IMPORTANT:
The University Plan extends Spring Break by one week. Students in the School of Medicine are expected to return to “virtual” class on Monday March 16. SOM students will return to class and clinical rotations as previously scheduled. Most classes will be online, but students should be present and ready to continue with skills training and other activities that require your presence. Working with our IT department, we are preparing to deliver your same curriculum with enhanced online learning and less time in classes.
We anticipate having next week’s curriculum sent out this Friday. For students at school and in the clinics this week and moving forward, please remember that hand hygiene is paramount to provider and patient safety. Finally, if you are sick, do not come in to the school or a clinical setting. Notify a dean, stay home and call Student Health Services. Student Health is prepared to assist you.
Thank you all for your dedication to medicine and your ongoing efforts to learn and serve others.
