The National Academies’ Action Collaborative on Preventing Sexual Harassment in Higher Education has launched a new partner network to engage higher education-focused organizations to share their work on preventing and addressing sexual harassment in the industry.
Emory University is one of 13 organizations that has joined the partner network as an inaugural group.
“My colleagues and I at Emory look forward to continuing our work on mitigating systemic gender bias and inequity as a member institution of the Partner Network,” said Dr. Meltzer, the School of Medicine’s executive associate dean of faculty academic advancement, leadership and inclusion, and chief diversity officer, who has long been a champion of this work.
In June 2019, Dr. Meltzer convened a SOM Task Force on Combating Sexual Harassment in Academic Medicine, along with co-chairs Drs. Carlos del Rio and Gina Lundberg. The task force’s recommendations were instrumental in the School of Medicine joining #TimesUpHealthcare as an institution committed to gender equity across our missions and in the ongoing work in our community and nationally with the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine and other professional organizations.
Ensuring a safe and inclusive environment in which all are valued and respected is a key priority in the SOM’s diversity, equity and inclusion strategic plan, which is currently in development. Promising practices for eliminating sexual harassment in medicine, healthcare, and higher education include shared commitment and accountability, transparency in reporting, embracing equity-mindedness, and evidence-based policies and practices.
